Italy Motorcycle Tour: Grand Tour Italia Bella, 16 days

16 days with 14 full days on the go. A fantastic motorcycle touring journey on the best motorcycle roads of Lazio, Sardinia, Langhe, Cinque Terre, the Motor Valley in Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and Umbria!

This will be a spectacular and comprehensive motorcycle tour exploring the beauties and differences in terms of culture, environment, food and wine, and biodiversity of six important regions of Italy. We get off to a great start with the island of Sardinia, the motorcyclists’ paradise, along wonderful winding roads with a continuous up and down between woods, coasts and ancient civilizations (Nuragic, Phoenician, Roman) and then continue with Piedmont through the wonderful hills covered with the Unesco heritage vineyards of the Langhe, Roero and Monforte area (since 2014).

From there begins the descending stretch of our tour along the north-western coast, first discovering glamourous Liguria and the charming seaside villages of the Cinque Terre Park, which is another Unesco World Heritage Site, and then entering Tuscany through the Apuan Alps. This motorcycle tour continues the discovery of enchanting Tuscany, between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, on rolling hills covered with vineyards and fields bordered by cypress trees. We leave Tuscany with a brief passage into Umbria and finally reach Lazio and dive into the history of the Roman Empire and the papal cities, ending up in Rome.

This will be an ever-changing motorcycle holiday where your ironsteed will allow you immersing yourself in many different landscapes, from colorful seaside villages to stone hamlets in the countryside, from austere medieval fortifications to marble-rich white cities of art. An unforgettable journey between history and nature that, along beautiful twisting roads, amid motorcyclists and panoramas dotted with old villages and monasteries, will introduce you to 13 Unesco sites including su Nuraxi, Portovenere, Lucca, Florence, the Val d’Orcia… not forgetting shepherds, mines, wineries, catacombs… A touristic package completed by a sensorial journey through the scents and flavors that the diversities of these six regions of Italy unfailingly pour into their traditional food and wines.

This motorcycle tour through seven regions of Italy has been scheduled twice in a year, in May/June and September, which are the best period for us motorcyclists to fully enjoy the sea of Sardinia and the nature in the hills and all along the way.

The tour and the covered area
A motorcycle holiday well balanced between the sea, the juicy roads and the unspoiled nature of Sardinia; the wines and haute cuisine of the delightful Piedmont countryside; the charm of the Cinque Terre Park and its delicious seafood; Tuscany amid Renaissance art cities, medieval burgs and nature, with its traditional cuisine and excellent Chianti wine; and Lazio amid the history of ancient Rome and the Popes.

Unesco sites along the way
On this motorcycle tour we will have the opportunity to visit as many as 16 World Heritage Sites which are: Barumini, Bologna, Cerveteri, Florence, Genoa, Langhe and Roero, Lucca, Modena, Pisa, Pienza, Rome, San Gimignano, Siena, Tivoli, Urbino, Val d’Orcia.

Climate and clothing
The generally dry and sunny climate in this motorcycle holiday requires comfortable and cool technical clothing (daily temperature between 18°C and 32°C. A swimsuit and towel, motorcycle and comfortable “normal” shoes, plus a cable with padlock to tie helmet and jacket to the motorcycle are the main things you need to be able to enjoy and experience this motorcycle holiday throughout Italy to the fullest.

A typical day ride
A typical daily ride is of 140-260 km (90-165 miles). The motorcycle tour starts at 9.00 am and includes a stop every hour with activities, always optional, or just for the pleasure. Each day ends with fuelling and arrival at the hotel around 4.30/5.00 pm, to have enough time for self-contained sightseeing or a relaxing poolside aperitif.

Tour Plan

Day 01 Meeting in Rome

We meet in the afternoon at our hotel in Rome. We go and pick up the rental bikes, if any. Right after we’ll have a briefing to give everyone a few simple rules for a greater safety for all. Finally before dinner we’ll begin to build the group through a typical Italian aperitivo.

Day 02 215 km Rome – Civitavecchia

Our tour begins at 9.00 am with destination Civitavecchia, the port of Rome, where we will embark for Sardinia in the evening. We get off to a great start right away with the discovery of three UNESCO World Heritage sites, two villas and a necropolis, along with a stretch of Lake Bracciano where we will have lunch in a typical Latium trattoria offering traditional local dishes.

Day 03 300 km Olbia – Alghero

After landing in the early morning in Olbia, our tour of Sardinia, a biker's paradise, begins today, with a coast to coast ride to the beautiful Catalan city of Alghero. On our way we shall visit the prehistoric "Tombs of the Giants" and admire the lunar landscape of the Moon Valley. We will also visit one of Sardinia's two most interesting nuraghi. After dinner a walk through the charming alleys of Alghero's historic center is a pleasant way to end the day.

Day 04 300 km Alghero – Arbatax

Our trip on the discovery of Sardinia goes on with one of the 10 most beautiful roads in Italy that will take us as well on the coast, from one picturesque seaside village to the other, and in the beautiful hinterland. It is a feast for the eyes, among heavenly sea views, woods and houses adorned with characteristic murals depicting scenes of the daily life. Our final stop is a visit to a Unesco World Heritage Site, the most important nuraghe in the world with its village and a structure completely different from the previous one.

Day 05 330 km Arbatax – Porto Torres

Today a magnificent motorcycle ride awaits, the longest of the whole tour, that takes charming and juicy roads. We set off on the eastern Sardinian freeway, a myth for all motorcyclists, in the direction of Porto Torres where we’ll embark in the evening. After a break in a coastal village we will reach the heart of Sardinia for a country lunch cooked by shepherds. After this triumph of ancient flavors the tour continues in the afternoon with a thousand turns. We shall cross Sardinia in the center and end up on the northern coast to visit one last seaside village before arriving to the port.

Day 06 230 km Genoa - Acqui Terme

After landing in the early morning in Olbia, we set off toward the Ligurian Alps to enjoy a splendid view of the entire Ligurian Gulf. Our journey continues with a ride along the Alpine ridges up to the Piedmont border. As we enter Piedmont, the landscape changes from mountains to hills for a fantastic ride lulled by gentle turns amidst the Unesco protected vineyards and landscapes of Langhe and Roero, wandering through medieval villages such as Barolo, Monforte d'Alba... and their world-famous wineries, before arriving at our hotel.

Day 07 160 km Acqui Terme - Sestri Levante

We leave enchanting Piedmont through the forests of a natural park in the Ligurian Alps until we arrive in Genoa for a tour of the historic center. Back in the saddle we go at the discovery of the beautiful Ligurian Riviera with a break in glamourous Portofino, the heart of Italy's dolce vita. We’ll spend the night at the gates of the Cinque Terre National Park.

Day 08 Sestri Levante - Sestri Levante

Rest day that we suggest you spend visiting by hop on - hop off train or boat the Unesco Heritage site Cinque Terre Park with its ancient fishing villages and pretty colorful houses.

Day 9 230 km Sestri Levante – Lucca

From here on, we head south into Tuscany, passing through the Apuan Alps and the quarries of Carrara, wherefrom the famous marble at the base of most Renaissance works is being extracted. Then a tour of the Garfagnana will take us to the gates of the city of Lucca, whose fascinating historic center is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Day 10 230 km Lucca - Modena

No less than 2 Unesco sites await you today. We start with the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the motorcycle journey continues wandering through the forests of the Apennine mountains between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna before reaching the Motor Valley among balsamic vinegar factories and the Ferrari and Pavarotti museums. The delightful old center of Modena and Emilian cuisine will be the epic end to this wonderful day.

Day 11 200 km Modena - Florence

Our tour in the Motor Valley continues with the Lamborghini and Ducati museums and the very heart of Bologna for a nice break in a special  Osteria. Then we get back on the bike to cross the legendary Futa, Giogo and Ratticosa passes and get to the gates of the Mugello Circuit and finally reach amazing Florence (Unesco site).

Day 12 0 km Florence - Florence

Day off that we recommend you to devote to the  discovery of one of most fascinating cities in the world. Its unique monuments, gardens, alleys, museums and markets will enchant you, unmissable is an aperitif by sunset on Piazzale Michelangelo, overlooking the awesome Renaissance capital.

Day 13 200 km Florence - Siena

Our motorcycle holiday continues southward through the enchanting vineyard-covered hills of the Chianti valley where we’ll discover wineries and charming villages. The day continues with a jump back in time to the first Unesco site of the day, the city with a hundred towers. by rock and rolling on the postcard hills, medieval villages and fortifications to beautiful Siena (Unesco site).

Day 14 240 km Siena - Orvieto

Today's motorcycle tour begins on the Crete Senesi (Siena ridges) and continues through the gentle curves of the Val d'Orcia (another Unesco site), with its postcard views, medieval and Renaissance towns, such as Pienza (Unesco site) and Montepulciano. The day continues through forests, hills and roads carved into the rock by the ancient Etruscans, up to the incredible village of Pitigliano, perched on the edge of a cliff. Our day endswith an array in green Umbria, in the beautiful papal city of Orvieto.

Day 15 170 km Orvieto - Roma

More winding roads through the woods for the last day of our motorcycle tour. A spectacular dying city and a pleasant break on the edge of Italy's largest volcanic lake plus a visit of the second papal city in this tour are the last highlights while riding back to Rome. After returning the rented motorcycles we will worthily conclude our motorcycling holiday together with a lavish farewell dinner.
